Gas in Spain > Introduction
Introduction
Demand for natural gas in 2009 amounted to a figure of 402 TWh (some 34.6 bcm), a 10.5% drop compared with the figure for 2008, and similar to the level in 2007.
2009 was marked by a downturn in economic activity in many sectors, including energy and, of course, natural gas. This led to a reduced demand for gas from the Industrial market and lower demand for electricity from combined cycle plants. This situation went hand-in-hand with the positive performance of renewable energies in electrical generation.

In specific terms, in 2009 hydro-generation increased by 9.6%, and wind power output by 11.1%. The two forms of output together generated (according to REE) 60 TWh of electricity, some 13.6% more than nuclear power plants, and equivalent to 77% of the electrical output from natural gas combined cycle plants.
