World crude output
Estimates of the Oil and Gas Journal indicate a downturn of 3.2% in oil production in 2009, the sharpest fall of recent years. The worldwide economic and financial crises lie behind this behaviour, serving to check demand.

The downturn in the extraction of crude was fairly widespread across all major geographical areas. The key exceptions were the Americas (with an increase in output of 7.8% in the USA and 7.6% in Brazil) and the countries of Eastern Europe and the CIS, with a slight increase in Russian output (+1.7%) giving the region as a whole a positive balance.

As in previous years, progress in discoveries in deep water was the main news item. The Caribbean, Brazilian waters and the Gulf of Mexico offered the best results.

Russia was once again the world's leading producer, with 9.9 million barrels per day, followed by Saudi Arabia (7.9 million), the United States (5.3 million), China (3.77 million) and Iran, with 3.72 million barrels per day.

As part of the process which began in the second half of 2008, drilling activity remained moderate, failing to return to the levels seen at the start of 2008.
