At the end of 2011, natural gas supply points reached 7,297,090, which was an increase of 101,521 when compared with 2010.
A total of 1,549 municipalities have natural gas distribution networks, which is almost 350 more than in 2005. Over the last 10 years, the average yearly increase of municipalities with natural gas services has increased by 55 per year on average.
The potential for further progress remains high. For example, Spain has 8,154 municipalities. As another example, the United Kingdom has around 62 million inhabitants and 22.9 million customers; this is a relation of 367 customers for every 1,000 inhabitants, in Italy this relation is 361 customers and in The Netherlands it is 410 customers for every 1,000 inhabitants. In Spain, with a population of more than 47 million inhabitants, the relation is around 155 customers for every 1,000 inhabitants.
