The slowdown in business activity has also had negative effects on the demand for gas in the industrial sector: the figures for 2008 indicate a drop of 3%, the sharpest fall in recent years.
In spite of this fall in demand, 43.9% of the natural gas sold went to the industrial sector.
One positive feature of the industrial sector in 2008 was the development of cogeneration. The data currently available indicates an increase of more than 13% in the amount of electricity fed into the system by cogeneration plants using natural gas as a fuel. Installed potential was close to 4,800 MW by mid-December. This growth resulted from changes introduced in 2007 and 2008 to the legislation governing the production of electricity using this technology.
