According to data from the National Energy Commission (CNE), demand for natural gas in 2008 totalled 451 TWh (38.6 bcm), an increase of 10% over the figure for 2007.
The rise in demand is higher than in 2005 and 2006, when increases of little more than 4% were recorded (4.1% and 4.3% respectively).
It is worth noting that, continuing the trend that began back in 2000, demand for natural gas at combined-cycle generation plants has been the driving force behind the overall growth in the sector.
Indeed, with the exception of the figures for 2007, growth in this area has exceeded 20% every year. During 2008, the increase in demand from electricity plants reached 32%.
It should be emphasised that the increased use of natural gas for electricity generation has occurred against a very flat background: demand for electricity in Spain in 2008 grew by only 0.91%, one of the lowest figures recorded in recent years.
