The reserves held by OPEC member countries increased by slightly more than the average figure, at 1.2%.
Central and South America together showed a significant increase in proved reserves. Venezuela is one of the countries whose reserves have increased the most, according to a report by Oil and Gas Journal. The reason for this is the new evaluation of heavy oil.
The most recent data shows that 60.3% of world oil reserves are in the Middle East, with 11.3% in Central and South America, 10.4% in countries that formerly belonged to the USSR and 9.3% in Africa.
On a country by country basis, Saudi Arabia held the largest reserves on the planet (19.7%), followed by Canada (13.3%), Iran (10.1%), Iraq (8.6%), Kuwait (7.5%), Venezuela (7.4%), Abu Dhabi (6.9%) and Russia, which accounted for 4.5% of the world’s proved oil reserves.
