The mission to reduce as far as possible the emission of contaminating gases which can cause premature death and climate change is strengthening the use of natural gas, particularly in the emerging countries where there is a steep increase in the use of hydrocarbons. However, both in these countries and in the more developed ones, a major challenge awaits: to reduce contamination in the cities.
Achieving the objective of reduced contamination in the cities will be easier with greater penetration by vehicles driven by natural gas and LPG.
At the end of September, there were about 7.2 million vehicles in the world driven by natural gas, of which 750,000 were in Europe. More important, however, is the emergence of new initiatives designed to promote the use of this energy in the motor vehicle fleet:
- In China, after a number of years in which the fleet of LPG vehicles has been fairly static, some movement is now taking place, albeit mainly in the public service area.
- In India, the first test of motorcycles converted to run on natural gas has been completed successfully (Adsorbed Natural Gas).
- In Spain, Gas Natural and General Motors signed a collaboration agreement in June to jointly promote the use of natural gas in Spain as a fuel for vehicles.
