The demand for gas from the Spanish industrial sector increased slightly during
the year, but with an overall result of little relevance: the positive rate (2.1%) is below
the growth of the Spanish economy as a whole. This evolution benefited from a recovery in
cogeneration during the second half of the year as a result of the new legislation that regulates
the production of electricity with this technology. The said legislation outlines a more realistic
scenario than before by allowing, for example, payment for all the electricity produced (not only the
electricity sent to the grid), dumping all the production on the grid and considering the costs of the
primary energy used for cogeneration. At the end of 2007, the power installed in cogeneration exceeded 6000 MW.
Of the electricity dumped on the grid, 30.5% was produced using natural gas.
And if consideration is given to the production of electricity in cogeneration
with gas, as occurred in 2005 and 2006, in 2007, natural gas was the energy most widely
used as a primary source for the production of electricity in Spain (see the table on the National
electricity balance by energy sources in the chapter titled "Energy in Spain" on page X).
At present, the natural gas sales corresponding to the industrial sector in Spain represent half the total.
