LNG: demand and trade
Global demand for LNG increased by more than 24% in the first three quarters of 2010, compared with the same period last year. Cedigaz late 2010 estimated that the global LNG trade reached a record high, reaching in absolute values ​​to a range of 47 to 53 additional bcm in 2010. The advance data published in April 2011 confirmed this estimate: 294.2 bcm, 21% more than in 2009.

Mid-way through the year, the operational capacity of all liquefaction plants around the world came to 253 million tonnes (0.93 bcm per day), while 60.3 million tonnes (0.22 bcm/day) corresponded to plants under construction, scheduled for service launch in 2015-16, according to estimates from the Andy Flower consulting firm.

Currently, LNG market liquidity is extremely high, with a market dominated by demand and a clear excess supply.

All forecasts indicate that China will undergo the largest growth as an LNG destination over the next few decades. The Wood Mackenzie consulting firm has studied this market’s potential. It concludes that China’s LNG demand will experience the greatest increase over the next decade, decreasing (the growth) after 2020 due to a rise in domestic production and gas pipeline imports. Today, its LNG imports total 320 bcm/year, 20% of the total demand for natural gas, according to the aforementioned source.

In spring 2010, the 9th interministerial meeting of the 11 members of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) was held in Oran (Algeria) with one clear order of business: reduce the LNG production rate and balance the market, an idea which seemed destined to fall short of the required quorum.

Japan and Korea have retained the top two positions in the list of LNG importing countries, a ranking in which Spain holds the subsequent spot on a global level.

While LNG flows have diminished in Japan and Korea, they have increased in China, Western Europe, Mexico, Brazil, Chile and the Middle East.

Cedigaz points out that the predicted increase in the worldwide LNG demand in 2010 appears to have spread throughout all regions. The support furbished by the strong recovery of Asia’s demand, the subsequent result of recovering economic growth, which stimulated industrial activity and the demand for electricity, especially in South Korea, is unquestionable.

Unlike India, where increased domestic production from the Krishna Godavari Basin tempered LNG demand, imports of Chinese liquefied natural gas doubled during the first quarter of 2010, spurred on by electricity generation and the industrial sector.

In Mexico, where LNG imports doubled in the first quarter of 2010, new operators on the international LNG scene (Argentina, Brazil, Canada and Chile) are proving they have major potential as LNG destinations. In most cases, LNG is needed to cover an increased demand for electricity.

According to Cedigaz, the estimated increase in the demand for LNG in 2010 is moving faster than the LNG supply, enabling a large part of the excess LNG to be absorbed. Thus, consumption levels in liquefaction plants around the world have risen from 73% in 2009 to approximately 80% in 2010.
